In 1884, a young couple with the last name of Burian arrived at the southeast corner of Lake Burien. The community that welled up around them took their name, but over the years it was misspelled to Burien. But people who live in this lovely area today don’t feel they have made a mistake to come here. With its central location just minutes away from downtown Seattle, Tacoma, and Sea-Tac Airport, you can be close-in and yet still feel as though you are just as close to getting away from it all.
Its beginnings a century ago as a waterfront community on gorgeous Puget Sound afford Burien the astounding views you come to expect in our area, but Burien has undergone extensive renovations in its infrastructure and curb appeal, and plans to do more. Burien’s new town center, opened in 2009, consists of 70,000 square feet of retail space and 400 condominiums, including some dedicated senior housing. Underground parking and a plaza area increase the urban walkability factor to 92.
The renewed business district reflects the diversity of its fifty thousand residents. A great many ethnic restaurants featuring cuisine from around the world are nestled into the neighborhood along with boutique retail and service establishments. A year-round vibrancy can be seen in the seasonal festivals and farmers’ markets, holiday parades, and cultural arts activities at the Highline Performing Arts Center. And Burien sustains its residents’ health with a large per capita number of hospitals and health care centers and wellness specialists.
Folks here treasure and preserve their six miles of shoreline and astounding mountain views. You can expect to pay around $450,000 to upwards of two million dollars for a single-family home here, dependent upon location and view. A few condominiums and apartments of all sizes are also available, including seniors-only. You no longer have to come here by Mosquito Fleet, but do come and see what evolving and exciting Burien has to offer.
